Baptism Invitation Wording: How to Include the Godparents (with Examples)

By Lorena Flores · · 2 min read

At a baptism, the godparents hold a special place, and the invitation is a lovely way to honor them. Here's what to include, how to list the godparents, and wording ready to use in English, Spanish or both.

What to include

  • The baby's name (or the children's, if they're baptized together).
  • The parents' names.
  • The godparents' names.
  • Date, time and church, with the address.
  • Reception place and time, if there is one.
  • How to RSVP.

Baptism invitations go out 4–6 weeks ahead. Work out your dates in our when to send invitations guide.

How to list the godparents

There are three common ways, from most formal to simplest:

  • Below the baby's name, with the word "Godparents" and their full names. The classic choice.
  • In the invitation line: "His parents and godparents invite you…". Works well when space is tight.
  • On the back, next to the reception address. Ideal if you have several sponsors (for the candle or the christening gown) and want to mention them all.

If the godparents are a couple, write "Mr. and Mrs. Pérez" or both names ("Ana Torres and Luis Pérez"). Ask how they'd like to appear and proofread every last name.

Religious wording

  • With God's blessing, I will receive the sacrament of baptism. Please join us to celebrate.
  • Today I begin my journey of faith, and I want you with me.
  • We joyfully invite you to the baptism of our son, a gift from God.
  • My parents and godparents invite you to give thanks to God at my baptism.

Sweet and short wording

  • I'm getting baptized! Come celebrate with me.
  • A little step with a big meaning: my baptism.
  • I came to fill my family with love; now I want to celebrate with you.

Spanish and bilingual wording

  • Te invitamos al bautizo de nuestro hijo.
  • Con la bendición de Dios, sus papás y padrinos te invitan a celebrar su bautizo.
  • My Baptism / Mi bautizo
  • Please join us to celebrate. / Te invitamos a celebrar.
